Muay Thai (from Thai: มวยไทย, RTGS: Muai Thai, AFI: [mūaj tʰāj]), also known as Thai boxing, or traditionally as the art of the eight limbs, is one of the most dangerous contact sports out there and for Therefore, it is considered an extreme and illegal contact sport in several countries around the world. It is based on Muay Boran, which is developed standing up through blows with combined techniques of fists, feet, knees and elbows, as well as some sweeps, holds (to hit) and throws. It is very similar to other Indochinese boxing systems, such as Cambodian prodal, Malaysian tomoi, Burmese lethwei, and Lao muay Lao.


Today Muay Thai has become a national symbol of the history and identity of the Kingdom of Thailand. Its roots are in Muay Boran, a traditional variant and martial art that includes figures, open hand techniques, locks, throws and takedowns. Currently this discipline complements muay thai along with western boxing.


Due to its toughness, muay thai is often considered by many to be an extreme sport, which favors gambling, and therefore a sport that is considered illegal in several countries around the world, such as in some states in the United States. The competitions are not regulated or federated and are held clandestinely. It is one of the most used disciplines in mixed martial arts or MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)
